WADARC meets at – TS Vanguard, 9a Broadwater Road, Worthing. BN14 8AD

THE PAST WEEK

The meeting at Kithurst Hill attracted quite a few members, including Roger, G7VBR who provided refreshments – thanks Roger. Unfortunately there wasn’t much activity on 70cms FM and nobody had any gear for SSB, although there was some SSB and CW activity on HF from Alex, 2E0UMD and Bryan, G0SIU. I was able to open the GB3SN repeater at Four Marks (Hants) with just a few watts from a handheld, which proves that the location is good for VHF and UHF.

On Friday, Pete, G4LKW led a team of helpers and the temporary QTH for GB8SL (tent) was erected and the station set up at Shoreham Lighthouse. Unfortunately the trap dipole gave some trouble, even before it was raised in the air, with the wire parting company with one of the traps. Fortunately we had mains power by then, so Roger’s trusty soldering iron was put to work and a repair was made. The antenna was erected and appeared to tune OK, but over the next few hours, using higher power, intermittent SWR issues were experienced and Pete went off to fetch the Carolina Windom to erect in place of the dipole. Unfortunately, part of the Windom is vertically polarised and this led to severe QRM from the nearby broadcast station, which rendered 40 metres more or less useless, so the station operated mainly on 20 metres for a while and some rare stations were worked. Fortunately, Phil – G4UDU came to the rescue and took the dipole home to repair it, returning it a few hours later. Dipole re-installed and lower HF bands were usable again. Despite some rather strong winds and some lack of sleep, Pete and Ed (M0MNG) aided and abetted by various others, managed to work over 280 stations, including many lighthouses, over the two day Lighthouses event. No doubt a further full report will appear in Ragchew in the near future. Many thanks to all who took part, especially those who helped to setup and pull down and to Roger, G7VBR for providing much needed food for the operators.

Further details of the forthcoming Foxhunt will appear in next week’s Bulletin.

THE PAST WEEK

Our last meeting was a Tea and Chat with usual lively discussion taking place. We decided that we would visit Kithurst Hill (Storrington) this coming Tuesday (13th) for some on-air activity. Whilst members are free to use whichever bands that they wish, please bear in mind that the RSGB run activity nights on Tuesdays and this week’s event is on 70cm. Start time for 70cms FM is 7.00pm and for 70cm SSB it’s 8.00pm. It would be good if we can get a few contacts for the club on 70cms and any other bands that you have equipment for. Roger, G7VBR will be providing tea and coffee, etc., but you MUST bring your own mug if you want any! Please note that if the weather is really bad, we will meet at WADARC QTH (TS Vanguard, Worthing) and an announcement will be made to this effect on the club Announce reflector, possibly at short notice.

Pete, G4LKW gave some details of Lighthouses On The Air, which takes place next Saturday/Sunday (17th/18th). All help for setting up and pulling down will be much appreciated. For setting up, Pete aims to be on site at Shoreham Lighthouse by 2.00pm on Friday 16th. Striking camp usually takes place just after 4.00pm on Sunday. GB8SL will be on-air on Saturday and Sunday and it’s a good chance for members to get on the HF bands with a decent antenna and full legal power.

Most of you should have received an email informing you that WADARC Annual Subscriptions will soon be due. Please consider re-joining – your club needs you!

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday, Chris – M0VUE gave an excellent talk on setting up the logging program Log4OM along with its USB interface OmniRig. Even if you already use Log4OM, as I do, there are always new things to learn. We need more of this kind of demonstration, even if they’re treated as a refresher course.

Other discussion took place as well, as Chris has been trying to keep our programme of events on track. As he pointed out, this is almost impossible at times, especially when possible speakers are contacted and they don’t even have the courtesy to reply! We are desperately looking for new speakers – we can’t exist with just tea and chat evenings, however attractive they are to some.

Also last week, Bryan – G0SIU delivered sheets of plywood to be used as crawling boards when accessing antennas. Volunteers moved them onto the roof/balcony area and they’re now ready for Phil and team to be able to work on the antennas. Thanks guys.

We’re probably going to have another outdoor event on a nearby hilltop. Please let me know which hill you prefer, either by direct email or via the WADARC Discuss reflector. Devil’s Dyke has been mentioned – is that too far out for members? It is an excellent VHF spot to the North.

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday’s meeting on Chantry Hill was quite well attended for an outdoor event. Fortunately it turned out to be a fine evening and with a slight breeze, it wasn’t too hot. Several stations were setup, with various antennas on several bands and Ed, M0MNG reported some VHF/UHF DX with contacts in Milton Keynes and Southampton, amongst others.

Chris, M0VUE had a small problem with RF getting back into his IC7100 on 80 metres, but fortunately he’d brought a spare choke, which was easily connected and acted as a braid breaker, which cured that issue.

Thanks to Roger, G7VBR for providing tea, coffee and cake to keep our inner persons going.

Congratulations to one of our newer members, Andy who now sports his new callsign M7AJW and is now working towards his Intermediate licence.

Last week’s meeting just goes to prove that there is activity on 2 metres and 70cms. A couple of our members put out calls on the FM calling channels and received quick replies. It’s also well worth using SSB on the appropriate calling frequencies, even if beacons can’t be heard.

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday was a Tea and Chat evening with some members investigating antenna replacement and moving poles. All looks doable and crawling boards have been ordered, to allow safe access to some parts of the roof. Further work will be carried out in the very near future.

Saturday was the Worthing Fire Service Open Day and a small team of volunteers headed by Pete, G4LKW setup a station on 40 metres using the callsign GB3WFB. At this time it’s not known how many QSOs were logged, but thanks to Ed, Roger and Bryan for helping Pete out.

Please note that this coming Tuesday’s meeting is on Chantry Hill, Storrington with an early start at 7.30pm. Tea and cake will be provided, so you MUST bring your own MUG for tea!

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday’s Junk Sale must be one of the worst attended I’ve ever been to. Whilst there were at least 3 club members on holiday, are people not buying surplus gear any more? There were a few good bargains to be had and some very useful components too. Unfortunately, not all of the higher priced rigs were sold and these will now be offered to the public via eBay. If you can remember anything that you meant to acquire but didn’t, please contact Norman, 2E0RKO who is arranging disposal. Many thanks to Alex, 2E0UMD who did very well, stepping in as a first-time auctioneer.

Please note that next Tuesday’s meeting has been changed to a Tea & Chat, which is to give Phil and team a chance to work on replacing the antennas, without missing out on any other activities.

THE PAST WEEK

Chris, M0-VUE gave an excellent talk and demonstration of building antenna parts using 3D printing techniques and the Fusion 360 CAD package. Some subjects covered were choice of materials and their properties, consideration of how the printer will construct a part when there’s apparently nothing to support it and methods of putting parts together, including use of Super Glue.

Conditions on 2 metres and 70 cms continued to be favourable last week with French beacons in particular being audible for many hours. VHF Field Day seems to have been popular too, as I worked one French station with a serial number over 400!

JUNK SALE

Please note that the Junk Sale and it starts at 7.30pm and sellers should be able to offload their items from 7.00pm onwards. For those not aware, there’s a convenience store on the North end of the shopping parade opposite TS Vanguard and they sell biscuits!

WADARC meets at – TS Vanguard, 9a Broadwater Road, Worthing. BN14 8AD

THE PAST WEEK

True to their word, the ‘Foxes’ commenced transmission at 7.30pm from Lancing Clump and were actually heard within TS Vanguard on handhelds. However, propagation was strange as they were not initially heard in areas of Worthing, where better antennas were in use. The foxes were Bodie, 2E0VRM and Chris, M0VUE. ‘Chasers’ were Dorian, 2E0FSI – Ian, M0IAD – Vic,G8MUQ – Roger, G4TNT – Roger, G7VBR. Dorian was the winner of the 2nd leg of the Foxhunt. Possibly due to the new format, all but one found the foxes. Around ten of us listened in at TS Vanguard and met the others for tea afterwards.

Ed, M0MNG reports that 2 metre propagation has been very good from time-to-time and he managed to work PA0 on a very modest beam and low power from Sussex. Although when I checked over the weekend, the French beacons were apparent, ON0VHF/ON0UHF were quite weak. I put out a few CQ calls but nobody answered. This is a really bad state of affairs, especially as the band is under threat from a French conglomerate. Use it or lose it!!!

Please note that NEXT WEEK (9th) is the Junk Sale and it starts at 7.30pm. There are no Silent Key items this time, so we may have a more orderly event, although there may not be as much money for the club. Please see this section in next week’s Bulletin for further details.

THE PAST WEEK

Sorry I couldn’t make it to last Tuesday’s meeting, but Maureen had to come first. She’s had a small procedure for Carpal Tunnel in her right wrist and is doing well, but still needs my help. So far I’ve not managed to poison us or make any white shirts scarlet!
Roger reports that around 10 members attended the meeting and lively discussion ensued. Bryan, G0SIU was once again busy working on the Shack and has completed installation of the Cable Tidies.

This Tuesday sees the 2nd leg of the 2 metre foxhunt. TS Vanguard will be open for all members who are not taking part on the road. Here are instructions from the ‘Foxes’:

We will start transmitting at 7:30pm on 145.425 MHz FM. We will transmit the 1st 3 calls at 10 minute intervals, the next six at 5, on the 6th call we will reduce power from 5w to 1w and transmit every 2 minutes. We will be using a basic antenna. We know this is a change in format but it will help people find us. Clues will start at the end of hour 1, depending on the weather people may need to walk to find us a maximum of 100 metres from the road, just to make it interesting, if its raining we will be in a car. The North boundary will the Top of the Downs, East – Portslade, West – Angmering.

If anyone fancies bringing a portable 2 metre antenna and suitable rig to TS Vanguard on Tuesday, to listen to the Fox Hunt proceeding – it will be much appreciated.

WADARC meets at – TS Vanguard, 9a Broadwater Road, Worthing. BN14 8AD

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday the weather held up and around 20 of us met at Goring Gap. Thanks to Roger, G7VBR for providing tea, coffee and some delicious cake, as well as a small tent to operate in. Alex, 2E0UMD setup a portable (fishing pole) mast to support a 1/2 size G5RV antenna, but with only 5 Watts phone, any contacts were a struggle. Another antenna that appeared was a kite antenna, but it’s not certain of it got connected to a rig, or if contacts were made. One or two contacts were made on 2 metres, but it got a bit chilly around 9.30pm, so a quick clear-up was in order and site abandoned.
