WADARC meets at – TS Vanguard, 9a Broadwater Road, Worthing. BN14 8AD

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday, we were lucky to have Nigel, G3YSW our RSGB Regional Manager come over for a visit and to give a short talk about RSGB activities as well as answer members’ questions.
Following Nigel’s talk we watched an RSGB video on the Farnham SDR and many of those present said that they learned something from it. I must say that the quality of the video and audio was much better than previous offerings from the same source.
Meanwhile work continued on the Shack and will resume in two week’s time.

Three of us attended the D-Day commemoration last Friday, at TS Vanguard on behalf of WADARC. Bryan, G0SIU gave two demonstrations of Amateur Radio and the use of Morse Code and it was mentioned by the Sea Cadets CO how well Bryan had kept the young audience’ attention and how pleased they were – thanks Bryan and thanks to Ed, M0MNG for assisting with setting up and generally promoting our club.

Our next meeting on 11th June will be at Goring Gap on the West side of the wooded area and toilet block. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided but you MUST bring your own mug/cup whatever. Sorry, no burgers etc., if you want other food, you must bring your own. If you’re bringing a radio/antenna etc., please also bring a suitable power supply or battery. Phil will be providing a generator for mains PSUs. NOTE the early start time.

The meeting place is on Marine Drive, Goring. The right hand image shows the short path onto the green on the South side, just past Aldsworth Avenue which is on the North side.

THE PAST WEEK

Due to road works and long traffic delays, a few members didn’t make it to last Tuesday’s Tea and Chat meeting and possibly some were on holiday, so there were only ten of us, but at least those present seemed to enjoy themselves. Hopefully, work in the Shack will re-commence next Tuesday.

Roger, G4TNT has produced a new (and interesting) edition of Ragchew – see below for details.

Ed, M0MNG has returned from his foray in the USA and no doubt there will be links to photos and videos soon – perhaps a short article?

Jonathan, G1EXG reports that he has worked IK7LMS in JN80XP square, via Sporadic E on 2 metres, which goes to prove that there is DX on the VHF and up bands, if you care to look for it!

THE PAST WEEK

Unfortunately Chris was called away for work and could not return in time, so last Tuesday’s meeting reverted to Tea and Chat, which those present seemed to enjoy. The Dayton Hamvention had recently taken place and there was some discussion and information from those who had made the trip across the pond.

Philip, G4KIL attempted a Raynet check-in on 60 metres, but was not successful, mainly due to local RF noise. The noise situation should be remedied soon, once the dual mag-loop is installed. Meanwhile, Bryan – G0SIU was putting his woodworking skills to good use, making alterations in the Shack for cable tidies and cable tray. In the meantime, I’ve located a source for roller security blinds, so hopefully we should soon be able to get the Shack equipment installed and secure.

Phil and others had a brief discussion about antennas and a plan of action has been formed. We were also lucky that Dave Jackson from Sea Cadets paid us a visit and we were able to secure the necessary permission and safety recommendations for access to the main roof.

THE PAST WEEK

I found last week’s talk by Steve Shorey, G3ZPS to be highly interesting and entertaining. Steve gave us a comprehensive history of Police communications, including dispelling the myth that the first device used was the whistle, although we’re still not sure where the term “Old Bill” really comes from, as there appear to be at least 16 versions of its origin.

Thanks to Norman and co. for re-boxing the FT101 series and to Bryan for clearing the operating area of the shack and preparing to install cable tidies and a cable tray.

This weekend was the Hamvention (Dayton) in Ohio and several WADARC members have attended. Last Thursday, Phil called into the 40 metre SSB net using his Flex radio and Butternut antenna at home, controlled by his tablet, whilst standing in the breakfast queue near Dayton!

Ed, M0MNG has fulfilled a dream to hear a fully loaded jukebox playing golden oldies, in a diner in the USA. Ham radio does have its alternative uses!

Although last week’s talk was a good ‘un, I can’t help noticing that it could have been better attended. I realise that some may have already departed for the USA, but there could have been many more members at the club. Club meetings are only as good as the members who turn up, so even if it’s not exactly ‘your subject’, please make an attempt to support WADARC by turning up for meetings more often.

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday’s club meeting was a demonstration of the new Icom IC-9700 by myself, with thanks to Ian, M0IAD for providing a portable stand and collinear. The rig has been well-received by most users, with a couple of issues found by a few weak signal/digital users. With good sensitivity and high quality audio, it is certainly the best VHF and above multimode that I have ever owned.

Whilst my demonstration was to a certain extent interactive, I did receive a couple of complaints that I could not be properly heard, because some members of the audience had decided to hold their own private conversation/s. Not only is this downright bloody rude, it’s also disrespectful to the rest of the members who are trying to hear. If you really must chat when someone is giving a talk, please go into the tea area and shut the door. I don’t want WADARC to get a bad name amongst prospective speakers!

This weekend, some of our members supported the annual Mills On The Air event, from Salvington Mill, with thanks to Pete and Pete, Ed, Alex, Roger, Phil, Philip and any others I’ve missed, for running the station – GB0HSM – and for assistance in setting up etc., Roger reported that it was quite cold inside the base of the windmill on Saturday, but I must say that it had warmed up by the time I visited on Sunday. The station made around 140 contacts on HF, many of these being windmill sites and 5 QSOs on 70cm using Edmund’s portable setup. Fortunately, the weather was very kind to us and there seemed to be a lot of visitors. I’m sure that the High Salvington Mill Trust found that WADARC made a valuable contribution to the Mill’s 60th Anniversary open day. Please support our meeting on Tuesday. This will be a talk (see below) on one of the rare occasions we manage to secure an ‘outside’ speaker.

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday, most members present took part in a practical evening, run by Chris, M0VUE which involved building HF transmitting loop antennas. This was a great success for all concerned, especially as the antennas actually worked!

Bryan, G0SIU and Graham, G8BZL had a discussion about the club shack and formed a plan of action to get started on re-building the shack and securing equipment. This will also involve replacing some of the poles, which support current antennas, as well as replacing the lanyards. We will be approaching the Sea Cadets to ask if they would mind us storing the FT101 series of equipment and maybe installing them at a later date if required. We will also be asking to install a suitable SDR, so that the Sea Cadets can explore all bands.

The committee also met last Wednesday with a very full agenda. Of immediate interest to some members, we have purchased a new (at a very favourable knock-down price) Icom Desk Microphone for use with the club’s IC-7300 and one of our members has purchased and donated an Icom IC-910 all-mode transceiver for VHF/UHF. Please note that this particular rig does not contain the 23cms module. We will be looking to install suitable antennas for VHF/UHF in due course.

Whilst Chris’ team were testing out antennas last week, they also discovered a source of RF noise, emanating from the sensor loop that feeds the fire alarm. We will be approaching Captain Minter to see what can be done about this.

THE PAST WEEK

Firstly you’ll be pleased to hear that Bryan, G0SIU is out of hospital and doing well. He should be at the club on Tuesday.

Last Tuesday saw some lively discussion on various matters and Chris, M0VUE was able to demonstrate FTCALL and other digital modes, in the club shack, despite the indifferent antenna and extreme difficulty trying to match it to the IC-7300. Although the shack will ultimately be suitable for operating and some experimentation, it’s painfully obvious that it’s too small to hold a demonstration that all members can see at the same time. With this in mind, it’s our intention to run some permanent co-ax from the shack into the main drill hall.

Unfortunately some committee members had urgent commitments and we were unable to form a quorum, so last week’s committee meeting was cancelled at short notice and will be held this coming Wednesday (1st May) instead. Report next week.

THE PAST WEEK

Thanks to Dorian, 2E0FSI for acting as the Fox in last week’s Fox Hunt. The fox was eventually found, but not until almost 9.30pm when the event was due to close. First to find the Fox were Bodie, 2E0VRM and Chris, M0VUE followed by Ian, M0IAD about a minute later. Also taking part were Roger, G4TNT and Vic, G8MUQ. There were only three of us at the club QTH, listening to proceedings and we were surprised that Ian actually managed to take part, as he was in a loan car which broke down – not a good advert for the garage concerned!

The remainder of the kit that goers with the FT101ZD is now in the shack, but not fully connected as we need to find some manuals. Some of the other ‘junk’ should be removed tomorrow, leaving more space for us to setup our stations. The LZ1AQ mag loop is under construction and if it works as well as mine (it will) much of the HF noise we experience, will be eliminated.

Unfortunately, today I had a call from Bryan, G0SIU to say that he would not be at the club tomorrow, as he is in hospital. Hopefully they won’t need to keep him long and he’ll make a quick and full recovery. Get well soon Bryan.

Tomorrow, (23rd) Chris, M0VUE will be demonstrating FTCALL at the club. If you don’t know what that is, come along and find out.

THE PAST WEEK

We were supposed to be finding a noise source in TS Vanguard, on VHF/UHF last week, but there was nothing conclusive to work on. Dave’s portable spectrum analyser showed a spike around 149MHz, but that was steady and likely to be legitimate and certainly wasn’t within an Amateur band. Another possibility is that because some of us were using unshielded handhelds (plastic cases) the noise was getting into the IF part of the rig and not down the aerial. That said, it was interesting to watch Jonathan, G1EXG nulling out HF noise, using his homebrew loop antenna – indoors!

Bryan, G0SIU managed to get his KX3 to match the HF dipole that feeds the shack right now. Not sure if any actual QSOs took place, but there was a lot of CW to be heard.

For my part, I concentrated on trying to get the FT101ZD to transmit. The reason it didn’t TX last time we tried it is because the link to the PA heaters was not made on the rear accessory plug. There’s a cable coming out of the plug which is terminated in a DIN plug, but we don’t yet know what it should be plugged in to. Linear? Transverter? Tuner? We will find out when Roger brings the rest of the boxes that came with it, probably in a week or so. In the meantime, I found some solder and formed a crude link and was able to get transmit power out of the rig.

This coming Tuesday is the first leg of the annual Foxhunt. Dorian, 2E0FSI will be the fox and will be transmitting on 145.425MHz FM at regular intervals, starting at 7.30pm local time. There is no fixed starting place for fox hunters, so it is probably a good idea to find a high spot to define the first bearing. If you get lost or can’t hear the Fox, please use talk-back via GB3WO.

For those not taking an active part in the Foxhunt, we will be meeting as usual at TS Vanguard at 8.00pm (no earlier) and it should be possible to follow progress from there. Tea and biscuits will be available.

THE PAST WEEK

Special thanks for Ted, G3EUE for last week’s talk and DVD and to Bryan, G0SIU for his addition to the programme. Having chatted to Ted on the Thursday 40/80 metre net, I find that he is quite a fountain of knowledge about Iraq and other places around the World. Also, thanks to Ian, M0IAD for sorting out the DVD player at the last minute!

I met up with a gentleman from Kent on Friday and he has taken the AR88 from the shack. I recently sold it on eBay so that’s the last of the boat-anchors gone. There are still a few bits and pieces left to remove, so please let me know if you want anything.

This coming Tuesday, we will have the usual Tea and Chat AND possible finding of a ‘nasty noise’. Please bring along any portable equipment you have that could help us to find the source of QRM which covers the 2 metre and 70cms bands. It appears to be inside the building, because it greatly diminishes when a hand portable is checked outside the building.

I realise that there were two vehicles in the ‘top slots’ in the car park last week, but they belonged to Sea Cadets staff who were having a private meeting. However, I must remind all WADARC members that the TWO parking places nearest the building are reserved until 8.00pm for any disabled member or another member who has given a disabled member a lift. If any member continues to ignore this rule, they may be asked not to use the car park at all! There are NO exceptions.
