WADARC meets at – TS Vanguard, 9a Broadwater Road, Worthing. BN14 8AD.

THE PAST WEEK

The program listed last Tuesday’s meeting as an on-air night with CW + tea and chat. The K3 was available and there are plenty of Morse keys in the shack, but nobody seemed interested. Is it that members are really not interested in getting on the air, or is it that everyone wants their hand holding or their arse kicked to actually participate?

Fortunately, Jonathan – G1EXG had brought along one of his antenna projects and was able to explain how it works and the rest of the time was taken up by tea and chat.

The LZ1AQ mag-loop kit has arrived from Bulgaria and work is now in progress to get it built and mounted on the roof at TS Vanguard.

I have also found the SGS 500W external auto-tuner that hid itself in the store. It just needs a bit of an exterior clean, some new cables and it will be ready for us to use with the proposed antenna/s.

One packet of biscuits donated last week (thanks Jonathan) a few more would be appreciated.

The deadline has passed for selling Les Mayhew’s kit to members, so it will now be offered to the general public and dealers. Items are:

  • Daiwa CN-801 SWR & Power Meter
  • Icom IC-756PRO (usual screen fault, but does light fully after a short ‘warm-up’)
  • Icom IC-910H – 144Mhz/432MHz

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday was a practical evening and I’d like to thank Chris, M0VUE for providing the components and some good radio entertainment. Two teams built various traps etc., but I’ve no idea if there was an actual winner. Despite an initial reluctance, most members eventually joined in and lots of soldering and testing kept them busy until well after 9.00pm.

We’ve disposed of quite a lot of shack equipment on behalf of G8RDK’s estate, since last week. Listed below is the unsold remainder which will be held until next Tuesday and if not sold to members, will be offered to the general Amateur public. If you’re interested please let me know:

  • Daiwa CN-801 SWR & Power Meter
  • Icom IC-756PRO (usual screen fault, but does light fully after a short ‘warm-up’)
  • Icom IC-910H – 144Mhz/432MHz
  • Manson EP925 PSU – 13.8V 25A SMMFJ 834H RF Ammeter

WADARC meets at – TS Vanguard, 9a Broadwater Road, Worthing. BN14 8AD.

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday was listed as a Tea and Chat event, so most members seemed to enjoy indulging in a good ol’ ragchew. I had arranged a meeting with Captain Minter to discuss our proposals for the Shack and this was attended by myself, Roger – G7VBR, Ian – M0IAD and Graham – G8BZL. I’m pleased to tell you that the meeting was very successful and we can now go ahead with setting things up. We’ve already removed some of the old ‘boat anchors’ and sold them to WADARC members, but there are a few bits and pieces still to be disposed of, including the AR88. Let me know if you’re interested.

We’re also disposing of shack equipment on behalf of G8RDK’s estate. Proceeds of the sale will go to WADARC and we want to realise as much as possible for club funds. We’re offering all of the gear to club members first, before seeking a tender from a dealer. If you’re interested please let me know, but please – no silly amounts – some of this equipment is worth ‘real’ money. All is in good condition.

THE PAST WEEK

It is with regret and sadness that I have to report the passing of two ex-members of WADARC, both within a couple of weeks of each other.

Les Mayhew, G8RDK had been unwell for some time and had moved to a nursing home, where he finally became SK. A funeral for Les will take place on Friday 15th March at 2.40pm in the Muntham Chapel – Worthing Crematorium. No details of flowers or donations.

Dave Potter, G1OCL suffered a major stroke a short while ago and became SK within a short time of that. I was particularly surprised to hear about Dave, as I had seen him only a week before and he seemed fit and well. A funeral for Dave will take place on Friday 15th March at 11.40am at Worthing Crematorium. At this time the chapel is unknown, so those attending should ask staff on arrival. There will be a wake for Dave after the funeral in the “Back Room”, Royal British Legion, 6, Culver Road, Lancing. All friends welcome. Family flowers only please, donations welcome to the Stroke Association.

At last Tuesday’s meeting, Graham – G8BZL ran his Kenwood TS820S on the dipole antenna at TS Vanguard and although Phil’s QTH is only a few miles away, communication was established, with Phil operating a Flex radio remotely from downstairs! Graham said that the rig managed to match the antenna on all bands, including Top Band, although the SWR was a little high on 160m. A bit of old-fashioned pioneering? Smile

Spaceweather reports “A month with no Sunspots”! “The sun has just passed an entire calendar month with no sunspots. The last time this happened, in August 2008, the sun was in the nadir of a century-class Solar Minimum. The current stretch of blank suns shows that Solar Minimum has returned, and it could be as deep as the last one.” Food for thought? Don’t get too despondent.

WADARC meets at – TS Vanguard, 9a Broadwater Road, Worthing. BN14 8AD.

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday saw a good turnout. The meeting was mostly about digital modes and new member Jonathan very ably demonstrated many of the modules that are available for all digital modes. Norman also demonstrated use of rig and PC, whilst Bryan was getting to grips with hooking up his laptop and KX3.

Next Tuesday will be an on-the-air night with tea and chat. We will be testing out the capabilities of Graham, G8BZL’s TS850S.

It’s hoped that we will hold our Annual Awards Ceremony on Tuesday 5th March. We need to know who will be attending so that we can buy sufficient food for the gathering. Please fill in the following Doodle Poll ASAP to indicate that you and any partner will be there: https://doodle.com/poll/q8u4s8rnhn7apyd7 Please do this by next Wednesday 27th February. If your name isn’t on the list, you can still come to the meeting but there will be no food for you.

We are going to move the club reflectors soon. They will be moving to groups.io and appropriate addresses have already been reserved. All members who are subscribed to the current reflectors will be moved to the new system. If you don’t want to be included, please let me know ASAP. Once we have moved, we’ll let all members know of the new email addresses for you to send and receive. There should be no disruption to normal service and you should find the new reflectors much more reliable.

WADARC meets at – TS Vanguard, 9a Broadwater Road, Worthing. BN14 8AD.

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday’s meeting was a Tea & Chat with On-Air in the shack. There was some interesting discussion on what members wanted from the club programme and useful info was gleaned from prospective new members.

Graham, G4FNL asked for feedback on the recent special event station – GB5WOR – which was very favourable and there was some discussion on the QSL card, which is a work in progress. If we can get all of the club together, we will try to take a group photo which may appear on the card.

We had a committee meeting last Wednesday. Progress on the new shack was discussed and we’re grateful to Jonathan, G1EXG for volunteering to build a noise cancelling mag-loop antenna to the LZ1AQ design. We’re also requesting a private meeting with Captain Minter, to discuss specific things we want to do, which may require approval. Chris, M0VUE still assembling a new programme of meetings/events for WADARC and is looking for people to give talks.

It’s hoped that we will hold our Annual Awards Ceremony on Tuesday 5th March. We need to know who will be attending so that we can buy sufficient food for the gathering. WADARC meets at  – TS Vanguard, 9a Broadwater Road, Worthing. BN14 8AD.

THE PAST WEEK

For last Tuesday’s meeting, some fool decided to give a talk on Front Panel Design! I hope it may have been of use to some members and maybe spurred you on to make your own project, with a well-made box to put it in. As I pointed out, you can make your own from raw materials, or you can take the expensive route and have a company do all the cutting, drilling and finishing for a really professional looking job.

One thing that my talk did prove is that we can connect a laptop to the projector and it all works well.

We have a committee meeting on Wednesday 13th and of course progress on the new shack will be discussed. Chris, M0VUE has volunteered to assemble a new programme of meetings/events for WADARC, so if you have any favourite suggestions, please email Chris or one of the committee.

CLUB MEETINGS & EVENTS

FINALÉ

It can’t have gone unnoticed that club nets are not nearly as well patronised as they used to be. On HF this may partly be due to lack of interest as a part of the bottom of the sunspot cycle, but surely this can’t be the greatest part? Sure, signals come and go, but surely that’s part of the challenge. On VHF/UHF we can’t blame sunspots, so where is everybody? C’mon people, give it a try and renew old on-air friendships. A list of club nets appears in every Weekly Bulletin, just scroll up!

WADARC meets at – TS Vanguard, 9a Broadwater Road, Worthing. BN14 8AD.

THE PAST WEEK

Last Wednesday’s meeting was designed to make an attempt to get on the air from the new shack. Well, we didn’t actually get any signals out, partly due to a missing microphone and partly due to lack of serviceable aerials. A portable aerial was on site, but it was very cold and nobody really wanted to go outside to erect it or remove it! Fortunately, the power switch had been left turned on for us, so we were able to play with the elderly HF receivers that are currently available. It’s obvious that most of them have seen better days and it would probably cost too much to repair them, even if there’s a desire to do so. Norman had some success with the club’s K3 and was able to hear Amateur stations, despite the indifference of the aerials. There are a number of Morse keys available, but nobody seemed interested in wielding one! The rest of the evening was taken up by drinking tea and general chat. One good thing is that the provision of exclusive parking is popular and we are starting to (re-) gain new members.

FINALÉ

Some good news has just been received – new keys for the shack power button have now been cut, so we will be able to switch on when we want and isolate as necessary.

We can now make plans for removing/replacing/adding to equipment that’s in the shack.

WADARC meets at – TS Vanguard, 9a Broadwater Road, Worthing. BN14 8AD.

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday’s meeting was the 2nd one at TSVanguard and was well attended, with over 20 members taking part in ‘potential shack’ inspection and subsequent discussion on what we may want to do with it. Alex has taken notes of members’ suggestions and these will be taken on board by the committee. Bryan, G0SIU and Graham, G8BZL have volunteered to carry out work in the radio room, once it’s been approved. We will also be looking for volunteers to form an aerial party, as it’s obvious that the existing antennas will need some repair at the very least and maybe total replacement in others.

Although we could perhaps use an HDMI to D-Sub adaptor, it’s probably better if we have a dedicated HDMI cable to the overhead projector. Fortunately, Bryan-G3GVB’s daughter, donated me some HDMI cable and suitable connectors to make a long lead, so it won’t cost the club anything.

Although we’re unlikely to have much success with existing antennas, we will be using a portable antenna and the club’s K3 to attempt to get the club on the air, at this coming Tuesday’s meeting.

We’re also hoping to make an extensive update to the club’s forthcoming programme of meetings, as soon as Chris, M0VUE returns from a business trip and can devote time to it.
