THE PAST WEEK

Last Wednesday Graham, G4FNL gave a most interesting talk on his recent Botswana DXpedition, callsign A25UK. In particular, in excess of 44,000 QSOs in 10 days is quite remarkable and the group are to be congratulated. Follow up/QSL information can be obtained on the A25UK website: www.A25UK.com

Following the recent EGM and the Committee’s decision to pursue shack premises for the club, we have hit a major snag, where the Parish Council will only allow severely restricted access. We have therefore decided not to follow up on the LPH room and we’re now actively seeking an alternative, with 24/7 access and hopefully more favourable terms.

The bands have been quite lively, with good DX to be had for those dedicated to chasing it. 6 metres has been very good from time to time and even 40 metres has had its moments, usually in the early evening. Also, 80 metres suddenly came alive on Thursday with many stations taking part in the RSGB 80m Club Championship, on SSB. Perhaps the club could consider entering this contest next year?

Waters and Stanton have announced that F9FT/Tonna have quit the Amateur Radio side of their business. If you need spares, probably a good idea to make a list and approach any of the UK dealers who may have some stock.

PROPAGATION

HF:

Conditions continue to be variable with 80 and 40 metres favouring Europe during the mornings and inter-G in mid-evenings, although 40 has been quite good towards the middle of the UK, during the Club’s Thursday net. Occasional openings on 10 and 15 metres, with some quite strong DX on 17 and 20 metres using digi-modes.

VHF/UHF:

2 metre/70 cm conditions have been variable with a few enhancements, despite the heatwave and possible temperature inversions. Although they don’t transmit continuously, with a little patience, repeaters can also be useful as a propagation indicator.

6 metres continues to bring in good DX due to Sporadic E. Still worth a check as often as possible.

Don’t just tune around and listen. If nobody calls ‘CQ’ everyone will think that the band is dead!

THE PAST WEEK

Last weekend saw the PW 144MHz QRP Contest. Chris, M0VUE and Andrew, G1VUP operated GB3WOR from Kithurst Hill and reported some fairly brisk business until conditions deteriorated.

Perhaps the club highlight of the week was the recent EGM to decide on the future of a club shack. Although the original proposal was defeated by secret ballot, after a vote of confidence from the attending members, the committee have decided to rent the proposed room on favourable terms, and pay the rental fee from existing club funds, for a limited period (possibly up to 1 year) to see if the shack proves to be popular. If it does not, we will terminate the rental and cut our losses. The club acceptance of the rental terms depend on us obtaining permission to erect a tower, complete with rotator and suitable antennas.

PROPAGATION

HF:

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: Spewing a stream of solar wind as fast as 700 km/s (1.6 million mph), a hole in the sun’s atmosphere is turning toward Earth. Forecasters expect the stream to reach our planet on June 15th or 16th with a 40% chance of minor G1-class geomagnetic storms when it arrives. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras in the nights ahead, especially in the southern hemisphere where deepening autumn darkness favours visibility.

It’s likely that the solar stream has been affecting HF once again with some very erratic QSB and raised noise levels. Some enhancement also on 15,17 and 10 metres.

VHF/UHF:

2 metre contacts were good for the weekend PW contest, although conditions deteriorated drastically around lunch time last Sunday. Conditions seemed to pickup again on Monday evening, with strong signals from GW being heard in Shoreham. Strangely, the beacons didn’t indicate anything special, but perhaps that’s because the enhancements seemed to mainly affect signals coming from the West.

For those with beams and modest power, 2 metre auroral contacts could be favourable during the next few days.

6 metres continues to bring in good DX due to Sporadic E. Well worth a check as often as possible.

Mr Ofcom has paid a 2nd visit to ‘GNX Towers and thinks he’s found the source of the local QRM. It appears to be from a neighbouring building and is possibly a very nasty wall wart. Gaining access to it with a view to replacement may be more difficult than actually finding it. Watch this space…………….

This week:

Meeting on the 7th was an outside radio evening that took part at the carpark in Honeysuckle Lane High Salvington.

Andrew G1VUP with his 2m beam – fighting with the QRM from the local paging transmitter !

Chris with the fibreglass poll and a multi linked dipole – pick the band you want with the connecting clips – using this with the clubs IC-7300

I had an 8m fibreglass fishing pole with a helically wound non resonant wire – easy to tune with the KX3 internal ATU and worked from 60m – 6m – this was mounted above the bed of the truck using the metal as a ground plane.

We all had QSO’s – time limited only by the rain front blowing in that arrived around 9pm.

Last week Graham G4FNL with Peter G4BVH was active on the downs to the East of Ditchling Beacon for the RSGB HF NFD In the “Low power unassisted multi operator portable section” there used to be just a single event class but they have now generated several different ways of doing the contest to encourage greater participation. We will have to ask Graham when he is next at a club meeting if he thinks this has been successful – as a participant for many years he has seen all the different sets of contest rules come and go.

Writing this on Saturday morning – remember tomorrow is the PW 2m QRP contest and WADARC will be at the car park on Kithurst Hill to the west of Storrington – please try and help/operate – this coincides with the 2m Backpackers contest to generate extra 2m operators – activity will be using all modes at 5W (up from last years 3W ) to match the BP contests rules.

Access is from a turning off the B2139 – setup is from 0900 on site, if you are helping with the setup, please arrive on time to allow everything to be done with no last minute panics !

Big event this week was multiple sporadic-E linkups on 6 meters

yesterday.

Average daily sunspot number rose this week from 15.6 to 19.3. This

was largely due to the fact that there was one zero-sunspot day last

week, and no days with zero sunspots this week.

Average daily A index, planetary and mid-latitude were both 5.6 this

week. Last week they were 13.3 and 10.6.

Predicted solar flux is 72 on June 9 and 10, 75 on June 11 to 13, 72

on June 14 and 15, 78 on June 16 to 26, 80 on June 27 to July 1, 78

on July 2 to 8, 80 on July 9, and 78 on July 10 to 23.

Planetary A index is predicted at 5 on June 9 to 11, 8 on June 12

and 13, 5, 12, 25 and 10 on June 14 to 17, 8 on June 18 and 19, 5 on

June 20 to July 10, then 10, 12, 25 and 10 on July 11 to 14, 8 on

July 15 and 16, and 5 on July 17 to 23.

Field Day weekend, June 24 and 25 shows a changed prediction for

June 23 to 25 with a solar flux at 78, and planetary A index of 5 on

all three days. This is improved from last week’s forecast in

ARLP022 which projected a higher geomagnetic (A index) forecast and

lower solar flux.

Our usual Czech source for geomagnetic forecasts is away this week,

so here is another Czech resource with predictions for only the next

week:

June 15, active conditions can also reach minor storm level.

THE PAST WEEK

Wednesday’s highlight was the 1^st leg of the G8FMJ Fox Hunt Cup on 70cm. Three teams took part, whilst several of us monitored proceedings at LPH and signals were heard from the ‘fox’ whilst I was using a simple handheld and indifferent antenna. The fox was Andrew, G1VUP who was ‘hiding’ in his van at Humphrey’s Gap, Shoreham behind a building (much further South and he’d have had to get the oars out!) Transmissions started at 19.30.

And the winner is: Ian, M0IAD, time 20.42 – followed by Dorian, 2E0FSI, time 20.45 – not sure if Roger, G4TNT and Terry, G0BRP found the fox, but thanks to all for taking part. Rumour has it that Ian will conduct the next fox hunt through the club repeater – GB3WO. Not as stupid as it sounds – think about it!

Also on Wednesday preparations were being made for the Shoreham Coast Watch event, which takes place on Saturday/Sunday 3^rd/4^thJune. Look out for GB1SCW between 11.00 and 16.00 both days.

The club’s IC7300 was checked out at LPH and will be used in conjunction with the Carolina Windom, which has been found to work well in the past.

Also on Saturday/Sunday is National Field Day – all bands 160 thru 10 metres – CW only. Computer CW is permitted so those who can’t ‘play it by ear’ can still take part. Graham, G4FNL and Peter, G4BVH will be operating on the Downs near Brighton and would appreciate a call – format is RST and serial number. If you hear them, please consider spotting them on the Cluster.

The fruits of Norman and Phil’s labours in the USA have paid off as I’ve used all of the parts brought back from Dayton, to upgrade the club’s K3. It now has all of the advantages of the K3S, minus the USB interface and extra internal pre-amps. Initial comments at LPH were that the audio is much more readable and noise performance is much better than before. Rumour has it that one member was so impressed that he’s going to upgrade his K3 too (name withheld in case his XYL reads this!)

Congratulations to Sally and Andrew, G1VUP on their 1^st wedding anniversary last weekend.

Last evening (Thurs) something affected 40 metres, possibly solar activity. Inter-G was the best I’ve heard it for over a year. Stations in Scotland, Yorkshire, Wales, Ireland and most of the rest of the UK as well as parts of Europe were easily workable with typical signals of S9+40dB and over relatively long periods. Later last night 40 metre signals sounded as if they were just starting to go ‘auroral’ with tonal break-up, despite being S9⁺. Maybe the curse has finally been broken?

PROPAGATION

HF:

ACTIVE SUNSPOT: On June 1st, a small but surprisingly active sunspot rotated over the sun’s eastern limb. In less than 24 hours, it has unleashed nearly a dozen C-class solar flares and hurled a pair of CMEs into space–an impressive display of fireworks. So far, none of the explosions have targeted Earth, but this could change in the days ahead as the active region rotates toward our planet. It’s possible that Thursday’s 40 metres enhancement was affected by this sunspot, as the nature of the strong signals could not be attributed to Sporadic-E.

VHF/UHF:

Once again the beacons continue to provide valuable propagation information, although there hasn’t been much activity or enhanced propagation on 2 metres or 70cms.

Chris, G3UFS reports that in the past, the 4 metre beacon GB3BAA – 70.016 MHz – Tring, Herts has been readable in Lancing and it should be possible to hear GB3WSX in Yeovil.

FINALÉ

Having struggled once or twice recently to read the callsign/s of a calling station, I would encourage all operators to use ‘alternative’ phonetics. For instance, ‘Foxtrot’ and ‘Oscar’ can sound surprisingly similar when buried in noise and partly broken up by other stations’ QRM, whereas ‘Florida’ made it clear that the required letter was ‘F’ not ‘O’. It’s not made any easier when operators gabble their callsign and keep repeating the same phonetics, especially when their accent is not the same as ours.

THE PAST WEEK

Saturday/Sunday 20^th/21^st many members visited Salvington Mill for Mills On The Air. An initial issue with the club’s IC7300, but insertion of a manual tuner sorted it out and GB0HSM was on the air. Stations were setup for HF, VHF and UHF with Edmund, M0MNG managing a good QSO rate on 70cms with a semi-portable setup on FM.

Wednesday 24^th was our annual social gathering at The Tollgate, Bramber. Despite rumours to the contrary, it was very well attended and was a light hearted affair. It was good to see Bryan, G3GVB’s family joining in with us and a good exchange of information took place. One of Bryan’s sons has even said that he may wish to become a Radio Amateur – nice guy too!

Propagation on the HF bands went from poor to unbelievably good, probably in as many minutes. There were some openings in the upper frequency bands throughout the week and evidence of Sporadic-E. Those listening on 40 metres on Thursday evening would have had their pleasure spoiled by what appeared to be Russian OHR (Over the Horizon Radar) manifesting itself as a massive signal, spreading across a significant portion of the band, sound like a buzz-saw. Reminds me of the days of battling Radio Tirana, when the only thing that made it through was CW.

VHF/UHF observation of the beacons revealed a mixed-bag of propagation with no major enhancements, despite the improved weather. There were however some worthwhile Sporadic-E openings into Europe on 6 metres. Worth a check on 6m as often as possible, as it looks like the season is upon us – one reason 6m is called the ‘Magic Band’.

URBAN MYTH DISPELLED

The definitive reason that Bryan, G3GVB disliked (hated) Germans: Many of us were led to believe that this was due to a school friend of Bryan’s being blown up in WWII. This is partly true, but not for the reasons you may think! In 1942 Bryan’s father had been strongly encouraging him to study and prepare to attend a local grammar school in Swansea, where they lived. At the impressionable age of 10, Bryan was looking forward to this and was quite excited and motivated. Unfortunately, a German bomber flew over the area and removed his intended school before he even got there!

The total interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) strength, as recorded by the DSCOVR satellite, was around 3.5 nT. Bz fluctuated between -2 and +3 nT. Geomagnetic conditions (K Dourbes between 0 and 3; NOAA Kp between 0 and 1) were ranged from quiet to unsettled level in the past 24 hours. Solar wind speed is expected to decrease even more today. In response geomagnetic conditions are likely to experience mostly quiet to unsettled conditions today (25-May-2017 April) and tomorrow (26-May-2017). Active conditions with a small chance for minor geomagnetic storm are possible on the day three (27-May-2017) due to possible arrival of 23-May 2017 coronal mass ejection.

VHF/UHF:

With weather conditions constantly changing, it’s difficult to predict enhanced propagation (ducting) more than a few hours in advance. Watch the weather reports for pressure changes and temperature inversions. Also, look out of your window – if you observe sea mist, it’s likely that DX conditions will be enhanced. Listen out for beacons and make a note of what you hear under ‘flat’ conditions, so that you can compare when you hear a new beacon or one or more of your ‘regular’ beacons are being received with increased strength. Bear in mind that brief enhancements over just a few minutes may be due to reflections from aircraft and don’t indicate enhanced conditions. Beacons mostly use horizontal polarisation and transmit their ident in CW, some also transmit digital information. You don’t have to be proficient in CW to recognise a beacon, as long as you can recognise that CW is being transmitted, you can work out which beacon you’re hearing from its frequency and beam heading.

FINALÉ

Finally a tale of friendship and co-operation. The WADARC Committee agreed to upgrade the club’s K3, so wheels were set in motion to obtain the necessary parts. We decided to wait until the recent Dayton Hamvention, so that one of our club members could bring the parts back with him and save quite a good sum in shipping costs. Elecraft could not carry the parts direct to Dayton, so I arranged for them to be sent to one of our friends, Tyler, N4TY in Kentucky, who offered to carry them to Dayton and hand them to Norman, 2E0RKO. Unfortunately, a few days before the Hamvention, Tyler got sick and was unable to travel. Fortunately Phil, G4UDU had to make a 160 mile trip south from Dayton to visit a friend, so offered to travel an extra 40 miles to collect our parts from Tyler’s home. A good example of selflessness where both Norman and Phil were happy to go the extra mile for the sake of the club, despite the fact that they may not personally use the K3 very much themselves.

WADARC Weekly News 20^th May 2017

Hello WADARC Member, I have the honour this week of compiling the weekly new for the club.

I did wonder if I should take the President of the United States press core and produce FAKE news, but no, we are British and we do not do that sort of thing.

Due to Bryan Phillips G3GVB not having a funeral that the members could attend, we decided that the 24^th May meal at the Tollgate would double as an opportunity to remember Bryan.

This mean there will not be any meeting at the Parish Hall this week.

PAST WEEK

Mills on the Air, weekend just past, the WADARC station went well, well on the most part. The guys did have some ATU / antenna issues.

On Wednesday I did a presentation on WANNACRY ransom software. Which I hope people enjoyed.

Phil and Norman are now in Dayton at the worlds biggest Ham Rally, hoping they will both give us a presentation on they return.

Weekly Bulletin – May 12 2017

OK so this week I had my arm twisted to do the Weekly Bulletin. Those who know me will know that I have not been a member of the club that long or even into radio so quite a bit of the news is a bit over my head but here goes.

For those who don’t know me, I was first introduced to Amateur Radio through being recommend to purchase a Baofeng UV-5R HT, that many of us have, for a running event. I passed my Foundation (M6FSI) in October 2015 and passed my Intermediate (2E0FSI) in August 2016 both with WaDARC and am mainly using VHF/UHF repeaters while out on the road for work.

Anyway enough about me, on with the news.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Please note that on the 24^th May there will be no meeting at the Parish Hall due to the evening meal at The Tollgate.

This weekend (13th/14th) is Mills On The Air, our first special event of the year. The venue is open to club members on the Saturday and members of the public on the Sunday.

We will be operating as GB0HSM – Location: High Salvington Mill, BN13 3AT. I believe there will be the opportunity to run 100 Watts on 2m. Grab the chance M6’s there will also be an HF setup with the Club IC7300.

THE PAST WEEK

On Tuesday a Net was held on 80m to remember Brian G3GVB which was held due to the fact his funeral was a small affair, as he was laid to rest at sea. I’m sure you will all agree that he will be missed around the club.

Wednesday was a DVD night which was quite well attended. I had to leave early due to work but hope everyone enjoyed it.

Not much else I can say really, I have been pretty busy with an 11 month old and plenty of work on so not much time for getting on the air. I hope to be getting on HF a bit more now that the shack (Shed) is a bit warmer now that Spring is here.

The club repeater GB3WO does seem to be monitored a bit more these days as I often have a QSO while driving from home to Shoreham-by-Sea where I am currently working on a project. Must get my full license so that I can use /MM ☺

This week:

Meeting on the 3rd was a general chat evening, plus Alan G4GNX organised a general tidying process to sort the books and paperwork plus some surplus items in the kitchen cupboards so that the “Tea Apparatus” could be stored

Graham G4FNL is in the last few days of his DX’Pedition to Botswana A25UK – they continue to be active on all of the bands using CW SSB & DATA – they obviously have a low noise threshold as it is amazing how they can be worked even if signals seem to be very low, they are leaving Saturday morning.

This is Graham’s first full blown operation of this type, he has experience of running and winning various contests and operating on special stations but this will be different in many ways. I hope he can put an overview of the event into a talk for us one evening at the club.

Well this seems to be missing out on both content and speakers planned for meetings, it is not a particularly difficult task – I have arranged this before and consider “I have done my time” spanning many years and it is down to some other members to step forward and put some input into the club. – If there is someone who wants assistance doing this, I will help.

Hello,

As you know we are operating a rota for the weekly bulletin until a volunteer can be found on a full-time basis. If anyone wants to take on the role to produce the bulletin please let the committee know. You can probably tell due to it being 3 days late, I’m not always around. My apologies for being tardy. Anyway, here we go warts and all. If you don’t make it to the end of this update.

THE PAST WEEK

The club meeting was held as per normal on the 26^th unfortunately I was not there (in Canada) and therefore I do not know how the antenna building workshop went. I can only assume it was an awesome outstanding success and the club’s new antenna analyser made a brief and startling appearance and was beheld by everyone. I’m personally looking forward to seeing what was built and what will be used at the 70cm DF hunt.

One thing that did happen last week was Graham G4FNL setup shop in Botswana as A25UK for a DX expedition This week 20m and 15m propagation has not been too bad and he has been possible to reach on 100w SSB. I hope you have been keeping an ear open for him. Also, the Kempton rally took place, some of us went, and bargains were to be had.

Well it is what is it now with the SFU still heading down and not due to pick up on average for a few years we will have to put up with the following forecast for the next week;

I’ve noticed a lot of people on the nets are getting QRM and QRN mixed up when discussing conditions on the 40 & 80 meter nets and complaining about the conditions. I can always hear you all from my home QTH so the QRN is often not that bad and propagation is ok, it’s your local QRM that’s the issue. So “top tip” it might be worth investing some time into your reception antennas and not into expensive radios.

Lastly, Inter G is not working well now (due to Brexit no doubt) and probably won’t for a few months; however, this does not mean you must give up on the club nets. VHF & UHF should be ok give them a go even if it is little wavelengths that do not require 100m of copper wire. You could also try to build an NVIS antenna.

I would strongly recommend having a listen to them on each for the frequencies you propose to use with 2m and 70cm, when there is a list it can be amazing just how far you can get under good random conditions VHF and UHF can provide from nowhere.
