THE PAST WEEK  –

Nets

All are thinly populated these days, Sat via GB2WO had just two participants. Sunday 80m was very sparse   Monday 2m  saw five peeps. There was more interest in 40m on Thursday but peculiar ionospheric conditions made for a somewhat dis-jointed affair. There is talk of moving Sunday morning to 160m which might give outliers more of a chance via groundwave. Comments via the reflector are welcome.

Breakfast : an off-schedule gathering at the Lancing Harvester proved the venue to be more agreeable than that at the Downlands so by mutual acclaim it was decided on Wed. that “first Sunday of the month” breakfasts will henceforward be at the ” Harvester/ Britannia ”  98 Grinstead Lane, Lancing.

“On the air” evening on Wed. was an amiable gathering and, later on,  Europe on 40m provided signals loud enough to overcome the high noise threshold which will go on be-devilling our operations until we move to the new premises in the quest for which our committee is, we would like to believe, so earnestly engaged. .

Weekly comment.

New call sign cut-off ?

Until the summer of 2015 Ofcom permitted radio amateurs to change their call signs but the policy was then changed suddenly.

It now seems there is a degree of flexibility for amateurs who are willing to change sex.

In a recent response to a radio amateur, Ofcom issued this ‘clarification’ of their policy:

We assign each amateur radio station a unique identifier – its call sign.  This helps us to meet our obligations under the Radio Regulations (the rules on the use of radio agreed by the international community at the ITU) which require stations to be clearly identifiable and which expressly prohibit misleading identities.  In order for a station’s identity to remain unique, these call signs may not be changed, other than in truly exceptional circumstances.

Weekly message

I’ll never complain about my call sign again.
