Worthing and District Amateur Radio club weekly up-date - Saturday 25th June 2016

*** Club diary for the coming weeks ***

Wednesday 29th June at Widewater, Lancing https://goo.gl/maps/gAhMRGJjTPq Meet from 7pm on the South side of the footbridge from Brighton Road.

Their is a car park off West Beach Road but it has a height restriction and I’m unsure of charges if any.

If you would like to cover anything in particularly or are able to bring any equipment (including masts and antennas) please do reply to this post on the discussion list. We’ll be bringing the club radio down and hope to also have 12V and 240V power but everything else depends on what people want to do or can bring.

Roger, G4TNT, recommends visiting Kings Fishbar in Brighton Road for your order.

In the event of poor weather check the announce list on the day – the club room will not be open.

Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th at Yaxham Scout Hut We’re hoping to operate at least 2 HF stations at this event and would like to do some workshops/ practical events.

Again, please post to the discussion list if you have any requests or are able to help with equipment or content for this weekend.

You’ll be able to camp/stay over at the hall/field over the weekend and we’re planning on a BBQ on the Saturday evening.

Band-plan changes (1 june 2016):

http://rsgb.org/main/blog/news/gb2rs/headlines/2016/06/03/band-plan-changes-from-1-june-2016/

This weeks summary radio prop. news from the RSGB solar forecast (by G0KYA, G3YLA & G4BAO):

solar flux index droped below 80 .. ongoing coronal hole activity pushed the K-index to five on Wednesday 22nd.

Noisy electrical storms across most of northern Europe didn’t help the bands either.

USAF predicts the solar flux index will be in the range 70-80, with the potential for unsettled geomagnetic conditions on Saturday the 2nd and Sunday, 3 July.

As the solar flux index at sunspot minimum doesn’t fall below about 66, this gives you some idea of the current state of the sun.

As it is mid-summer we can’t expect fantastic HF conditions either, with lower maximum usable frequencies during the day, compared with the autumn and winter, but higher MUFs at night.

If you want a challenge, try listening for the Alexanderson alternator at station SAQ in Grimeton, Sweden on 17.2kHz CW at 0900 and 1200UTC on Sunday, 3 July.

The Twente SDR on the web can cover 17.2kHz, or you can hook an antenna up to your sound card and use some specialist software. Amateur station SK6SAQ will also be active on 80m SSB and 40, 20 and 15m CW during the day.

VHF and up propagation news

Sporadic-E may be poorer next week as the main Atlantic jet stream activity has already migrated north, leaving much of central Europe under a much slacker pattern. The absence of active jet streams over Europe probably means that one of the main sporadic E triggers, gravity waves, may be missing or reduced. These waves propagate up from the turbulence of the jet stream at 12km height to the E region at 120km.

This absence will make sporadic E hard to come by except perhaps for the more northern paths across to Scandinavia where the jet stream may be slightly more active.

Next week we will find a big high with a very large east-west extent just north of the Azores and covering much of the Atlantic. This could give some interesting tropo paths down the western side of Europe from the UK to Spain and Portugal and onwards to the Canaries or Cape Verde.

It may also be a tempting week for those seeking the more unlikely options of transatlantic tropo. This is very much a long shot, since there are fronts involved which can easily break any ducts.

Moon declination goes positive on Monday and losses are falling with perigee on Friday, so EME conditions will improve as the week progresses.

A quick update on last weekend’s contest.
Sunday morning was very very wet in the morning and windy.
We 89 QSO across 20 Locator Sqs, last year we had 93 QSO cross 18 Sqs.
I think we will go reasonable well as the weather did put off a lot of stations….

* fantastic six metre propagation including Multi-hop sporadic E across the Atlantic (Arizona and south to Texas)

* HF dominated yet again by unsettled geomagnetic conditions.

* more unsettled geomagnetic conditions likely.

* Noon-time F2 layer maximum usable frequencies over a 3,000km path are hitting 18.2MHz at times

* 20 metres remaining open during the night

* VHF and up propagation – stream activity over Europe this week will be weaker and therefore any sporadic E produced may be more fleeting; so not such a good week.

* prospects for tropo are marginal

The current one for December 2015 is here. The newsletter contains some helpful links to the forthcoming HF and VHF contests, plus results of recent competitions.  To add a personal note: In 2015, I have taken part in almost every 80m contest run by the RSGB. I have also entered most of the other HF contests run by the same organisation. The end result is that I am now (just) in the lead for the overall HF championship cup. Exam Strategy

Categories: Training
Comments: No

I have been doing some research into why people fail multiple choice exams when my knowledge of them would make me assume they would pass.

The first issue is knowing your subject and the second biggest issue is the strategies used to take the exam. There is no substitute for knowing the subject fully but when faced with a question that has no correct answer or many correct answers when the paper is looking for just one correct answer, what do you do?

I’m beginning to notice a trend and I think you could all do better in the area of Exam Strategy.

If you take multiple choice tests as part of your career, such as teaching or computing, you will almost certainly do well or very well in such tests when the questions are ambiguous.

However, if you have never been exposed to or are rusty at this type of test, then you will probably do less well or always get the answer wrong.

Even people who have passed the exam have lost marks answering ambiguous questions incorrectly, when I’m sure they know the answer and have just applied poor Exam Strategy.

Below are two education based websites where there are pages dedicated to the subject so please read them and understand the task you have.

http://www.uwec.edu/geography/ivogeler/multiple.htm

http://www.uleth.ca/edu/runte/tests/take/mc/how.html

The reason for this message is that the RSGB has made a shift in their question pool to a question style of most correct from one correct. The questions seem to have a ambiguity factor. I have seen this type of question in exams I have taken in the past. As a club we will be taking this up with the RSGB but it is not going to change overnight and we need to get our current trainees through the exams – so learn Exam Strategy now!

It will give you the two to three marks you might need to pass. Remember, there are only two marks that matter – PASS or FAIL. One mark over the bar mean you get a new license, many over the bar just inflates the ego.

As part of future revision sessions we will discuss and work on Exam Strategy.
