Amateur radio in West Sussex - Training, Exams, Contests and Special Event Stations

Weekly Bulletin – February 2 2018

WADARC now meets at a new premises – Lions Hall, 21 Roberts Road, Lancing. BN15 8AR.

THE PAST WEEK

Last Wednesday meeting was a busy, industrious and fun evening – thanks to everyone for setting everything up. Chris M0VUE set-up loads of gear to allow people to make various things including: building a dummy load kit, a EFHW antenna and also a low pass filter. I asked Phil to bring along his RIGOL DSA815 spectrum Analyser to check out a 23cm antenna I had made (to go onto a 1.2m dish) and Ian also checked out a 144 MHz band-band pass filter. Both worked well, the analyser provided rapid and useful information.

Wi-fi battery
This week in Computer-Active magazine (well worth reading by the way) they describe a new wi-fi charged battery that is being developed. Presumably it trickle-charges by rectifying the RF from your wi-fi signal. The idea is that the batteries could be put into remote controls and fire alarms for example, so you never need to take them out to change them. I wonder what 100 Watts of RF from a nearby radio amateur station would do to them …

Top-band prop.
I saw a very interesting PDF article recently about top band propagation called “The 160-meter band: an enigma shrouded in mystery”. It’s not a new article but interesting non-the-less, see what you think at the link here:
