Amateur radio in West Sussex - Training, Exams, Contests and Special Event Stations

Weekly Bulletin – August 26 2018

WADARC meets at – Lions Hall, 21 Roberts Road, Lancing. BN15 8AR.

THE PAST WEEK

The 40 metre band was very much alive and kicking last Monday evening, with some stations (not Italians!) reading 5/9+60! There were similar conditions on Thursday morning, but they were short-lived with some QSB.

Last Weekend’s ILLW event seems to have gone well. No major hiccups and a lot of help from members. Some 481 QSOs, which is something of a record. Thanks to all who took part, especially Roger, G7VBR for keeping the crew fed.

Last Wednesday’s meeting was on practical matters and Bryan, G0SIU ably demonstrated ways of determining which screws to use and various tools to be used when joining wires and connectors.

There was also some discussion on the recent changes to the Foundation Licence Exam syllabus and a set of questions that “Essex Ham” had provided. It’s clear that some of the questions and answers are either ambiguous or just plain wrong!

From Spaceweather News: Surprising forecasters, a strong and unexpected G3-class geomagnetic storm is underway during the early hours of August 26th. The storm may have been caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME) that arrived with little fanfare 24 hours ago. Auroras mixed with moonlight have been reported from Scandinavia, Canada and northern-tier US states, such as New York and Michigan.
There will no doubt be effects on the HF bands – it will be interesting to see reports.
