Amateur radio in West Sussex - Training, Exams, Contests and Special Event Stations

All posts in Weekly Updates

THE PAST WEEK

Again, no meeting to report on this week. However, the bands seem to have been busy. There was a massive lift on 2 metres last weekend and DX distance records were broken. Edmund, M0MNG has been promoting WADARC via GX1WOR and has worked many distant stations on 2 metres and 70cms. He even managed a QSO via an Irish repeater, with a station in Spain – in Spanish!

80 metres has also been quite busy, with a European contest helping to put up the QSO count.

If you can’t make it to this Tuesday’s meeting, please think about a talk or practical demonstration that you could give, or know someone else who could fill the bill, please let someone on the committee know, so that we can add it to our planning programme.

Work will also be continuing on Tuesday, to complete the work in the shack, prior to installing some radios.

Please also put the word round as much as possible that Phil, G4UDU will be giving a talk on Flex radio and other SDR, with a practical demonstration, on Tuesday 21st January. Guests/non-members are welcome.

THE PAST WEEK

Obviously nothing to report from meetings last week, but we did have a couple of nets over the holiday period. There was also a 4 metre FM net on Christmas morning, run by Tony, G8XRX.

Phil, G4UDU ran the Santa Claus net on 80 metres on Christmas Eve. I counted at least 10 participants whilst I joined in, as follows:

G4UDU. G4GNX. G8MUQ. GX1WOR. G4LKW. G3EUE. M0VUE. 2E0RKO. G0BHK. G0NKZ.

The 4 metre FM net, although not a WADARC net, is reported here because it’s run for people in the Worthing area and at least two of its members are also WADARC members. The net commenced at 10.00am on Christmas morning, as follows:

G4NSJ. 2E1EOO. G4GNX. G4JEI. G0DWZ. G8XRX. There may have been others after I left the net.

The traditional WADARC Christmas Morning net was run by yours truly at between 11.00am and 12.00pm on Christmas Day. There were 14 participants as follows:

G4GNX. G3UFS. G4LKW. 2E0RKO. GX1WOR. M0HJF. G0TLU. M0TVV. G3POQ. M0LJK. M0RDV. G4FFE. M6WHH. G4WCP.

Thanks to all who took the trouble to join in the festivities.

THE PAST WEEK

Our annual Christmas Party took place at Casa Ciro Restaurant (Worthing) last Tuesday and seems to have been well enjoyed by those who were able to be there. We had asked to be in their upstairs room and they obliged by giving us exclusive use of it, along with our own bartender/waitress. The food was good and well cooked and there was sufficient time to chat between courses. WADARC Awards were given out (list below) and the customary raffle also took place. My thanks to Casa Ciro who donated two bottles of wine for the raffle and of course thanks to all WADARC members who donated prizes. Special thanks to Alison (Mrs 2E0RKO) for organising the sale of raffle tickets. Thanks also to Martin (son of Ron – G3SKI) for providing us with a traditional Christmas cake, which went down very well.

Unfortunately 3 people were unable to attend the Christmas party (one due to unforeseen work and two who were ill with cold/flu bugs) I hope recovery is swift and your Christmas is not disturbed.

I’ve heard from Phil, G0PAW that ex-WADARC member Derick Browne, G4XKF is now residing in a care home in Brighton. Phil visits Derick quite often and says that he is in good spirits and satisfied with his life. Despite Derick’s suffering from dementia, they are able to reminisce over past Amateur Radio happenings. I’m sure we all wish Derick the best for the future and thanks for his contribution to WADARC – especially the annual barbecues at his home in Hove.

Our next meeting at TS Vanguard is billed as a Tea and Chat, but we will also be planning for the future (discussion) and hopefully the final work will be completed on the Tambour Door installation in the Shack.

There will be no 40 metre net on Thursday next week as it’s Boxing Day.

There will be a “Santa Claus” Christmas Eve net run by Phil, G4UDU at 9.30pm on 80 metres – 3.712MHz +- QRM.
There will also be a Christmas Day 2 metre net between 11.00am and 12.00pm on S21 – 145.525MHz

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday was a Tea and Chat night. Work continued in the shack to install the new Tambour Doors and they are now functional but not yet lockable. Bryan, G0SIU will be bringing his router to the next meeting to rout a groove for the lock plate and Graham and Roger should be fitting the pelmet and doing some partition work. It’s really good progress as observed by those who left their seats last week to pass through the Shack for a quick look.

Tomorrow (Tuesday 17th) is the Christmas Party at Casa Ciro. Please bring any donations of raffle prizes to the restaurant on the night. No club meeting at TS Vanguard.

There will be a Christmas Eve net run by Phil, G4UDU at 9.30pm on 80 metres – 3.712MHz +- QRM.

THE PAST WEEK

Last Tuesday was a Tea and Chat night, whilst work continued in the shack to install the new Tambour Doors. Graham and Roger have been making a good job of it, despite my attack on Roger’s glasses with the vacuum cleaner and the installation instructions seemingly from MFI (remember them?).

Jonathan’s suggestion of a club project was put to those present and several people said that they’d like to take part, so we will be collecting more numbers and ordering several kits.

Next Tuesday’s meeting will also be a Tea and Chat, but without the shack in use. This is because we decided to abandon unfinished work on the shack last week, because time ran out and there’s still a bit to do. This meeting will be the last meeting at TS Vanguard before 2020!

The following Tuesday (17th) is the Christmas Party at Casa Ciro. Please bring any donations of raffle prizes to the restaurant on the night.

It is hoped that club nets will be run over the holiday period. Details will be published next week.

THE PAST WEEK

Rather than a formal talk, Bryan, G0SIU gave a demonstration on the use of manual antenna tuners, in the shack, at last Tuesday’s meeting. Despite disturbance from those of us concerned with the new tambour doors, Bryan managed to match the rather indifferent HF antenna at TS Vanguard, using mostly his Palstar tuner. It just goes to show that the slightly older techniques are still viable and in use.

The new Tambour Doors (roller shutters) were duly delivered and work has commenced on getting them installed.

Jonathan, G1 EXG has proposed a club project, which we can all make and costs only £9.50. We may even get it cheaper if we order in bulk. The item is an E-Field Active Antenna Kit and is featured on page 14 of latest December RadCom. We will be promoting this at future club meetings, so you can find out more then.

We’re going back to a previous system with the Club Programme, staring in January. There will be alternating regular slots of Tea and Chat (including on-air nights), Podcasts/Videos (with discussion), Talks/Lectures, Practical Evenings.
We now need to fill the slots, so if you can give a talk or demo or know of a good lecturer who would be willing to give us a talk (we are willing to pay them a reasonable rate + expenses), please let any of the Committee know.

The Christmas Party has now been finalised with Casa Ciro and all menu selections have been sent to the restaurant. I have a spreadsheet which will be available on the night, in case you forget what food you’ve asked for.
Ron, G3SKI will be bringing one of his excellent cakes to be served to those present and we have permission to run a raffle. Please bring any donations of raffle prizes to the party on the 17th. If you’re not booked for the party and would like to donate a prize, please give it to any committee member by 16th December.

THE PAST WEEK

A very interesting discussion took place after the ICQ podcast, last Tuesday. Some interesting suggestions for attracting new members to the club, especially the possible use of a Flex (or other) radio that can be remote controlled from a computer or phone, which the younger people tend to favour these days. Of course anything we install in the shack must have real knobs and dials for the rest of us who need them.

The new Tambour Doors (roller shutters) are being delivered on Tuesday and Graham, G8BZL will be making a start on installing them. We should soon be able to install usable radio equipment in the shack.

The Christmas Party Doodle Poll has now closed and I’m waiting for your choice of food from the menu, which was circulated last week. The closing date is December 2nd, so if you haven’t already done it, please let me know your choice ASAP to chairman@wadarc.org.uk

Please note that this coming Tuesday’s meeting has changed from a Tea and Chat evening to a talk on Antenna Tuners by Bryan, G0SIU. There will of course be time for tea and some chat.

Last Tuesday’s Junk Sale was not as well attended as expected, despite us informing several other clubs about it. Those who did attend managed to bag a few interesting bargains and Graham, G8BZL was kept busy auctioneering and keeping us entertained. Thanks Graham.

The Christmas Party Doodle Poll has now closed. Thanks to all 24 people who have taken part. The club has paid deposits for everyone and you’ll be contacted soon to choose from the menu, which was sent out a couple of weeks ago. For anyone who has missed the deadline and still wishes to attend, you may be able to make a private booking by contacting the restaurant directly, but knowing that the restaurant set the deadline (not WADARC) this seems a little doubtful.

Donations of raffle prizes for the Christmas Party will be gratefully received. Please contact any committee member with you donation. Ron, G3SKI and son are making a special cake for the occasion. Going on past years, this is a treat to look forward to.

There will be a committee meeting on 27th November, where a future programme of events for the year will be the main priority for discussion. If you have a particular topic you’d like to see covered, please let me know ASAP. Offers of lectures, demos, Amateur Radio related videos will be most welcome.

WADARC WEEKLY BULLETIN – November 10 2019

THE PAST WEEK

At last Tuesday’s Tea and Chat Bob, G3VXJ reported having worked some DX on 30 metres FT8, despite the band being apparently dead! Various discussions took place on other topics and Bryan, G0SIU setup a station in the shack, with his KX3. Here’s a brief summary:

Worked – E72R CW (Bosnia Herzegovina) Sent 579 received 559 with 15 watts
Worked – EA2OR CW Spain Sent 589 received 559

Six members visited the shack and were given demos of SWR of the dipole antenna. Quite a lot of appreciation of how quiet reception is. Showed that the existing antenna loaded 1:1 on 20m, 40m & 80 metres.
Did not use the 2m rig as was not sure whether the antenna was working.

The 2nd Surplus Equipment Sale is on Tuesday 12th November and other clubs have been invited, so hopefully there will be plenty of bargains. Graham, G8BZL has agreed to be our auctioneer. For those bringing equipment, please try to unload, then if the car park gets full, park your vehicle in one of the nearby streets. Please leave the top space clear for any disabled person.

Another reminder about the Christmas Party – we will be at the Casa Ciro Restaurant. 30-31 Marine Parade, Worthing. BN11 3PT. We have their upstairs room. The Club will be paying for members’ (only) meals. Please use the Doodle Poll here: https://doodle.com/poll/4dfzhc5pth2ifkzf to indicate that you’ll be attending. Member’s partners/guests will also be welcome. Deposits for guests MUST be paid before Friday 15th November. The Doodle Poll will also be closed on Friday, so if you haven’t got your name/guest name down, you need to do it soon. There will be no further bookings taken after that!

FINALÉ

The Farnham SDR was mentioned at a recent club talk and I decided to set it up on my shack PC to find out what could be heard. I started off with 2 metres SSB and transmitted from home, not expecting much to happen. Imagine my surprise upon hearing my own signal at S5, despite there being a big lump of chalk in the way and quite a few miles between antennas. This is going to prove a useful indicator of propagation, as well as the beacons. Farnham SDR can be found at: http://farnham-sdr.com

There’s a useful setup guide and if you run into issues getting sound to work, please read the guide – the suggestions do work!
